The Lakeside Collection Presents: LifeSource, Chicagoland’s Blood Center

Offering a range of seasonal home merchandise, The Lakeside Collection has earned a strong reputation for great discounts and high-quality goods. At the company’s offices in Bannockburn, Illinois, employees of The Lakeside Collection have dedicated themselves to charitable endeavors, participating in blood drives twice during 2011 and supporting a wide range of other initiatives. The Lakeside Collection works with LifeSource, a Chicago-based organization, in coordinating blood drives. Below, the company outlines LifeSource’s history and mission.

Formed in 1987 when the Blood Center of Northern Illinois and the American Red Cross Blood Services Mid-America Region merged, LifeSource currently maintains 18 donor centers as well as 3 mobile units. Each day, the organization conducts an average of 10 mobile blood drives, drawing blood for use while recruiting donors and collecting bone marrow. As the largest blood center in Illinois, LifeSource works with around 60 local hospitals in 6 counties, distributing more than 500,000 blood products each year.

LifeSource is led by a highly experienced Board of Directors composed of community members with a wide range of qualifications, including doctors, hospital executives, businesspeople, and civic leaders. The organization also relies on the work of volunteers, who provide LifeSource with more than 10,000 hours of valuable assistance each year. In addition to drawing and collecting blood, LifeSource operates a high-tech testing facility, which handles more than 600,000 tests each year, both for LifeSource and for other organizations. At this facility, LifeSource tests each blood donation in order to maintain a safe supply.

LifeSource is owned and operated by The Institute for Transfusion Medicine, a Pennsylvania-based company. LifeSource has earned licenses and accreditation from the Health Care Financing Administration, the Food and Drug Administration, and the American Association of Blood Banks.
